The Ritualist is a profession introduced in Guild Wars Factions.

"Ritualists channel otherworldly energies that summon allies from the void, and employ mystic binding rituals that bend those allies to the Ritualist's will. They hood their eyes to better commune with spirits that grant power and protection. The energy they channel drives Ritualist skills to enhance the deadliness of an ally's weapon and wreak havoc on an enemy's health.

The Ritualist can also use the remains of the dead to defend the living--not by reanimating corpses as a Necromancer does, but through the ritual use of urns and ashes. Where the Ranger lives as one with the spirit world, the Ritualist is its master. These bound, tortured souls will assist your party in combat, offer up life-sustaining aid, and attract the ire of aggressive enemies to take some heat off your back. In short, no group should be without the Ritualist's powers." ~The Official Factions Guidebook

The specialities of the Ritualist are:

  • Binding Rituals: Create powerful spirits by "binding" them with ethereal chains. These spirits have various abilities including dealing damage (such as Pain), provide healing (such as Recuperation), or negate damage altogether (like Union).
  • Item Spells: Conjure ghosts by holding their ashes within an urn. These bundle items can do everything from summon spirits (with Anguished Was Lingwah) to resurrect your allies (using Lively Was Naomei).
  • Weapon Spells: Improve allies' weapons with magic effects much like enchantments but without all the limitations (and benefits) enchantments receive.

The area where the Ritualist shines the most is team support, similar to the monk. Although he has many aggressive skills and ways to deal damage, he isn't suited very well to play solo or even to be a tank. A Ritualist's strength lies preparing for battle by summoning spirits and manipulating urns before battle even begins. Although, more recently, ritualists can be found in HA dealing massive damage through using spirits and Channeling for a powerful spike.

The Ritualist can be recognized by his typical robes, garnished with bones, teeth, shells and other objects. Like monks and necromancers they sometimes wear magical tattoos. Furthermore, Ritualists are blindfolded to better communicate with the spirit realm. The patron god of ritualists is Grenth.

Ritualists in PvP often find themselves in a backline position spamming their spirits to protect the whole team and are a favored target of enemy frontliners (Warriors ,Thumpers, etc.)

  • The conjuring of Spirits and Ceremonial Ashes is very reminiscent of Ancestor Worship, a practice done in most Asian countries. An example is Japanese Shintoism and portions of Confucianism.
