The Tainted Flames Ranger uses the effects of poison to whittle away at his opponent's health while using fire to cause mass damage.
[edit] Attributes and Skills
![]() ![]() |
Attribute Rank |
---|---|
Wilderness Survival | 10 + 1 + 1 |
Expertise | 8 + 1 |
Marksmanship | 8 + 1 |
Fire Magic | 10 |
- Either Troll Unguent or Resurrection Signet are recommended for the final slot
- Mark of Rodgort could also be used for that last slot as should be causing a lot of fire damage but it leaves you without any healing or resurrection skills
[edit] Equipment
- Druid's Armor for the extra energy
- Primary Bow: Poisonous Recurve Bow of Enchanting
- Secondary Bow: Poisonous Shortbow of Fortitude
- Optional Bow: Fiery Shortbow of Fortitude (for triggering Conjure Flame if Kindle Arrows is not up due to either interruption or expiration)
- Minor rune of Expertise, Wilderness Survival, and Marksmanship.
[edit] Usage
When using the Tainted Flames Ranger you'll want to start by casting Conjure Flame and then follow up with kindle arrows. Kindle Arrows lasts for 24 seconds, with a recharge time of 12, so you should be able to keep it up the whole time.
Conjure Flame, however, lasts for 60 seconds; by using a Fiery Bow string you ensure that you'll always be getting the effects of the spell.
After setting up the fire portion of the build you'll want to select your target and use Poison Arrow. It is recommended that your target be "soft" as these will go down the quickest in most cases. Another strategy is to use Poison Arrow on multiple targets to annoy the enemy monk into using Mend Ailment on multiple targets, thus draining their energy. By using Hunter's Shot you have a chance to cause bleeding or at least cause some good additional damage.
For protection, use Whirling Defense to prevent Warriors and other Rangers (typically) from interrupting your attacks and causing you additional grief. If going into Random Arena take Troll Unguent for self-healing or Resurrection Signet to bring a fellow party member back to life.
[edit] Variations
- Switch out Hunter's Shot for Concussion Shot or Savage Shot for an extra interrupt
- Swap out Hunter's Shot for Pin Down to prevent running and further harass your target
- Use Serpent's Quickness to recharge skills faster
- Use Barbed Trap for some additional protection and also for the bleeding condition
- Use Screaming Shot to replace Hunter's Shot.
- Replace a skill of choice and add in Mark of Rodgort with optional skills to complement it like Glyph of Lesser Energy and/or Kindle Arrows.
- Replace Kindle Arrows with Conflagration. This provides a longer amount of time for fire damage on arrows.
- Replace Poison Arrow for Barrage. To make this effective, however, one would need to take a couple of points out of Wilderness Survival and put them into Marksmanship. Also be aware of the fact that, Kindle Arrows is of no use anymore.
Another variation that you can try is setting Expertise to 7 and then through the application of a minor rune bring it up to 8. With this setup, you are free to apply 1 more point into Marksmanship. What this will do is cause Hunter's Shot to cause 1 more damage and increase bleeding by 2 additional seconds, while still getting the full effect of the Expertise energy reduction.
When facing foes with strong protection against fire (such as in the Ring of Fire) you won't do much damage, but a few changes will make this build effective against them. First, fill the optional spot with Winter, and then replace Conjure Flame with Conjure Frost, switching the attribute points you placed in Fire Magic to Water Magic.
