This build is not favored by the
GuildWiki community.
The general consensus among users of GuildWiki is that this build is not viable. |
This build is a common build used by ranger primaries to farm Ettins. The main concept is to lay traps in order to damage the ettins, and the usage of poison and other things to accelerate the killing rate.
[edit] Attributes and Skills
![]() |
Attribute Rank |
---|---|
Expertise | 10 + 2 |
Marksmanship | 10 + 2 |
Wilderness Survival | 10 + 2 |
- If you follow the attribute layout above, then you should be able to boost another attribute. This is what I use, as I have 5 points into domination magic, since I often alternate between a trapper and an interruption marksman. If you intend primarily to farm, then feel free to deduct marksmanship points.
- Penetrating Attack can be switched out for another main damage dealer, Storm Chaser can be switched out for another running skill, and the traps can be changed to your liking. Apply Poison isn't really too necessary, but it helps eat away at the Ettins' health.
[edit] Equipment
- Druid's Armor with any runes you like. I favor stronger runes in expertise and wilderness survival.
- Archer's Mask, or any other one.
- Longbow with a Poisonous prefix, and any suffix upgrade you want.
[edit] Locations
Exit Beetletun, pass the mergoyles and tengu up ahead and you will find the ettins all over Nebo Terrace. This is the main area where you can find them. There's often another two around the Statue Of Dwayna (of which it never hurts to get Dwayna's Blessing or Morale from if you have the favor) beyond. Or exit from Bergen Hot Springs. Make your way by the first cluster of undead. See the path to your right with tengu along it? You can take that path, or continue onward and take the right path after that. Ettins spawn there, but usually the ettin and tengu fight each other before you can really prepare your traps and such. However, what I like to do in this case is find a group of tengu and ettins that are busy fighting one another. Sneak up behind the ettins and place traps, attack them as well. If you inflict enough damage, experience and items will drop. If the tengu do the majority of the damage on the ettin, nothing will drop. Another good area is by the Ascalon Settlement. Go there by heading southeast from the Statue Of Dwayna. You'll find yourself in the Northern Kryta Province. The Ascalon Settlement is in plain view. Travel through the quaint little village until you come to a large area where Captain Greywind and a collector are. See the open area beyond? Plenty of ettins in that area. 2-6 roam nearby, then if you continue down the hill and get around the area where the trees become willow trees, there's often plenty there, too (mind though, that bog skales prowl the region as well).
[edit] The Method
Lay all three of your traps, wait a while and lay more if you wish. When ready, pull the closest ettin (hit C to target closest) to your trap. Since they are melee, you can pretty much just stand where you are and shoot at them, which helps chop off a bit of their health before they fight you. When they are hit by the traps, a few seconds afterwards, you may notice their usage of Healing Signet. Use distracting shot at this point. Don't worry, healing signet takes a few seconds to cast, and distracting shot's arrow travels rather quick. This will interrupt and disable the signet. It will usually be disabled long enough for you to kill the ettin. Now just keep shooting at it, with the occasional penetrating attack (or whatever you have in its place, see above).
Run around a bit if you want, for the barbed trap will cripple them. Use troll unguent to heal, storm chaser to get away. Often nearby ettins will aggro, but often you can kill several in one run, if not, remember, running from combat is not illegal! Run, wait for the ettins to get back a little, and try again. Lather, rinse, repeat. That simple, really. Apply poison is not mandatory, but it helps pack a bit of a punch.
Here's a map I whipped up quickly to give you a general idea of Ettin locations.
A - Beetletun B - Bergen Hot Springs C - Ascalon Settlement D - Statue Of Dwayna
All those areas with the "bright grey" circles are the main ettin areas.
[edit] Notes
try taking serpent quickness instead of apply poison i tested it myself in game with both builds the 1 with serpents quickness works the best.
