A Water Magic based build effectively combining slowdown and damage dealing. This build is particularly useful in missions such as Moddok Crevice and Iron Mines of Moladune in which particular situations make snaring important, providing the needed slowing capability but without sacrificing a whole party member to the purpose. However, it can be useful in other situations as well (especially when dealing with enemies that do not break aggro easily when this is desired - here the slow effect of Deep Freeze is especially desirable).

[edit] Equipment
Elementalist armor and Water Magic based staff or wand/focus combination of choice.
[edit] Usage
Water Attunement is your energy management and should be used at all times.
Against enemies that need to be slowed down, Deep Freeze should be first used and followed up with Freezing Gust, Shatterstone or Maelstrom. The combination of Deep Freeze and Maelstrom is especially lethal as the slowdown means even enemies that try to escape the AoE will frequently take several seconds of Maelstrom hits; this combination is also effective against enemy spell casters even when it is not absolutely important to slow enemies down, and synergizes well with any other AoE attackers in the party.
Blurred Vision is a useful defensive skill and helps make enemy Rangers caught in Deep Freeze even less effective. Arcane Echo is most effective used with Maelstrom but should be used at discretion.
Shatterstone, like Wastrel's Worry is extremely useful against Tyrian bosses due to the half-duration effect making it deal damage more quickly in addition to it being more likely that the second packet gets dealt.
[edit] Counters
Hex prevention and removal skills. Enchantment removal also may make certain combos, such as an echoed Maelstrom, difficult.
[edit] Variants
Blurred Vision doesn't especially fit with the rest of the build although it is a useful skill to have (especially as Moddok Crevice, where the build was tested and is most useful, has groups of hard-to-reach rangers with a powerful height advantage); you might consider bringing another skill in this slot.
Shatterstone is a very useful elite, dealing damage and helping cover Deep Freeze's hex effect, but most of the other Water Magic elites can be useful here as well; for instance, if additional defense is desired, Ward Against Harm and Mist Form are useful; Mind Freeze could be used for additional slowdown, or Water Trident could be used to repeatedly knock down already slow-moving enemies.
